English interpretation of the Chinese HSK 6 reading comprehension essay
Title: “The Realization at Dusk”
In a far-off and desolate kingdom lived a majestic emperor and a gentle empress. Once a land of splendor, the country had fallen into decline due to years of warfare, depleting its treasury and leaving its people in dire straits. Determined to revive the nation’s glory, the emperor decided to embark on a personal tour to seek solutions.
One dusk, as the emperor’s entourage slowly made its way through a barren landscape, a desolate silence hung in the air, broken only by the occasional gust of wind, adding to the melancholy. The emperor’s heart was heavy with worry; how could such a scene herald the nation’s rebirth?
Just then, a ragged patient stumbled out from the roadside, falling to his knees before the emperor, weeping uncontrollably. The emperor ordered his men to halt and inquired into the man’s plight. The patient cried, “Your Majesty, I am but a farmer from a nearby village. Years of drought have left our fields barren, and the war has torn my family apart. Now, gravely ill and penniless, I come to beg for your mercy.”
Moved, the emperor realized the absurdity and folly of the nation’s plight, which had ultimately fallen on the shoulders of these innocent people. He immediately ordered medicines and food to be taken from the supplies and personally handed them to the patient, promising to improve the people’s lives upon his return to the palace.
Back in the palace, the emperor began to reflect deeply on his reign, acknowledging his past extravagance and neglect of the people’s welfare. He resolved to take measures to ease domestic tensions, promote agriculture, and reduce taxes, allowing the people to recuperate.
As time passed, the country gradually regained its vitality. Green shoots sprouted on the once-barren land, and the people’s lives improved. The emperor, watching all this, was filled with a sense of accomplishment. He finally understood that true splendor lay not in the vastness of territory but in the happiness and tranquility of the people.
