How to Talk About Chinese History in HSK 7–9 Chinese

Chinese history covers thousands of years, but discussing it in Chinese requires much more than memorizing the names of dynasties, emperors, wars, and famous historical figures. At HSK 7–9 level, the challenge is learning the vocabulary used to explain historical change, political institutions, social structures, cultural developments, conflicts, reforms, and historical interpretation.

A beginner might be able to say that the Tang dynasty was powerful or that the Qing dynasty ended in 1912. An advanced Chinese student should be able to explain why a dynasty became prosperous, how political institutions changed, what caused a rebellion, how historians interpret an event, and how developments in one period influenced later Chinese society.

This requires a particular vocabulary. Words such as 朝代 (cháodài), 王朝 (wángcháo), 皇帝 (huángdì), 统治 (tǒngzhì), 政权 (zhèngquán), 制度 (zhìdù), 改革 (gǎigé), 政治 (zhèngzhì), 经济 (jīngjì), 社会 (shèhuì), 战争 (zhànzhēng), 起义 (qǐyì), 衰落 (shuāiluò), 繁荣 (fánróng), 继承 (jìchéng), 变迁 (biànqiān), and 影响 (yǐngxiǎng) allow you to move beyond describing isolated historical facts and begin discussing historical processes.

For an advanced student, the most important change is learning to think of history in terms of relationships. Chinese history is not simply a sequence of dates. It is a story of institutions, people, ideas, conflicts, economic changes, technological developments, cultural traditions, and geographical forces interacting over time.

朝代 and 王朝: Talking About Dynasties

Two of the most basic words for discussing Chinese history are 朝代 (cháodài) and 王朝 (wángcháo).

朝代 means dynasty or historical period ruled by a particular imperial house. It is one of the most common words used in general discussions of Chinese history.

王朝 also means dynasty, but it often carries a stronger emphasis on the ruling political order or royal house.

You will frequently encounter phrases such as 唐朝 (Tángcháo), 宋朝 (Sòngcháo), 明朝 (Míngcháo), and 清朝 (Qīngcháo).

Example sentences:
1. 中国历史上的许多朝代都经历了兴盛、衰落和灭亡的过程。(Zhōngguó lìshǐ shàng de xǔduō cháodài dōu jīnglì le xīngshèng, shuāiluò hé mièwáng de guòchéng)- Many dynasties in Chinese history went through processes of prosperity, decline, and collapse.

2. 唐朝被认为是中国古代历史上最为繁荣的王朝之一。(Tángcháo bèi rènwéi shì Zhōngguó gǔdài lìshǐ shàng zuì wéi fánróng de wángcháo zhī yī)- The Tang dynasty is regarded as one of the most prosperous dynasties in ancient Chinese history.

There is an important vocabulary pattern here. 历史 (lìshǐ) describes history, while 朝代 identifies a particular historical period. When discussing a dynasty’s characteristics, Chinese frequently uses the structure 某个朝代的……, meaning “the … of a particular dynasty.”

兴盛, 繁荣 and 盛世

Chinese historical writing contains many words for describing periods of prosperity.

兴盛 (xīngshèng) means flourishing or prosperous.

繁荣 (fánróng) means prosperous, flourishing, or economically and culturally vibrant.

盛世 (shèngshì) refers to an era of prosperity and stability, often associated with a particularly successful period of government.

Example sentences:
3. 唐代的经济和文化十分繁荣,对后世产生了深远影响。(Tángdài de jīngjì hé wénhuà shífēn fánróng, duì hòushì chǎnshēng le shēnyuǎn yǐngxiǎng)- The economy and culture of the Tang period were highly prosperous and had a profound influence on later generations.

4. 历史学家常常讨论一个王朝为什么能够形成长期稳定的盛世。(lìshǐxuéjiā chángcháng tǎolùn yí gè wángcháo wèishéme nénggòu xíngchéng chángqī wěndìng de shèngshì)- Historians often discuss why a dynasty was able to create a long period of stability and prosperity.

后世 (hòushì), meaning later generations or later historical periods, is especially useful in historical writing.

兴衰: The Rise and Fall of Dynasties

One of the most useful advanced words for discussing history is 兴衰 (xīngshuāi).

兴 means rise or prosperity, while 衰 means decline. Together, 兴衰 means rise and fall.

The expression is often used to describe the development of dynasties, countries, civilizations, and institutions.

Example sentences:
5. 研究一个王朝的兴衰,需要同时考虑政治、经济和社会因素。(yánjiū yí gè wángcháo de xīngshuāi, xūyào tóngshí kǎolǜ zhèngzhì, jīngjì hé shèhuì yīnsù)- Studying the rise and fall of a dynasty requires consideration of political, economic, and social factors at the same time.

6. 历史学家试图从不同角度解释帝国兴衰的原因。(lìshǐxuéjiā shìtú cóng bùtóng jiǎodù jiěshì dìguó xīngshuāi de yuányīn)- Historians attempt to explain the causes of the rise and fall of empires from different perspectives.

兴衰 is useful because it allows you to describe historical change without immediately taking a position about whether a particular ruler or event was “good” or “bad.”

统治: Who Ruled China?

统治 (tǒngzhì) means to rule or govern, particularly in the context of political power.

It can refer to the rule of an emperor, dynasty, political organization, or government.

Example sentences:
7. 这个王朝统治中国的时间超过了两个世纪。(zhège wángcháo tǒngzhì Zhōngguó de shíjiān chāoguò le liǎng gè shìjì)- This dynasty ruled China for more than two centuries.

8. 新政权建立以后,开始重新调整原有的统治方式。(xīn zhèngquán jiànlì yǐhòu, kāishǐ chóngxīn tiáozhěng yuányǒu de tǒngzhì fāngshì)- After the new regime was established, it began to readjust the existing methods of governance.

统治 can be a neutral historical term, but depending on context it can also carry a critical meaning. This is an important feature of advanced Chinese vocabulary. Words cannot always be translated according to a single fixed English equivalent.

政权 and Political Power

政权 (zhèngquán) means political power, political regime, or political authority.

It is more abstract than 政府 (zhèngfǔ), which generally means government.

A 政权 can be established, overthrown, consolidated, weakened, or replaced.

Example sentences:
9. 新政权建立以后,面临着恢复经济和稳定社会秩序的双重任务。(xīn zhèngquán jiànlì yǐhòu, miànlínzhe huīfù jīngjì hé wěndìng shèhuì zhìxù de shuāngchóng rènwu)- After the new regime was established, it faced the dual tasks of restoring the economy and stabilizing social order.

10. 一个政权能否长期维持,与社会内部的各种力量密切相关。(yí gè zhèngquán néngfǒu chángqī wéichí, yǔ shèhuì nèibù de gèzhǒng lìliàng mìqiè xiāngguān)- Whether a political regime can survive for a long time is closely related to various forces within society.

密切相关 (mìqiè xiāngguān) is an extremely useful advanced expression meaning “closely related.”

制度: The Institutions Behind History

制度 (zhìdù) means system or institution. It is one of the most important words in historical and political Chinese.

When discussing Chinese history, you will encounter terms such as 政治制度 (zhèngzhì zhìdù), 官僚制度 (guānliáo zhìdù), 科举制度 (kējǔ zhìdù), 土地制度 (tǔdì zhìdù), and 社会制度 (shèhuì zhìdù).

Example sentences:
11. 科举制度对中国古代社会的政治结构和文化发展产生了深远影响。(kējǔ zhìdù duì Zhōngguó gǔdài shèhuì de zhèngzhì jiégòu hé wénhuà fāzhǎn chǎnshēng le shēnyuǎn yǐngxiǎng)- The imperial examination system had a profound influence on the political structure and cultural development of ancient Chinese society.

12. 历史上的制度变化往往会影响普通人的日常生活。(lìshǐ shàng de zhìdù biànhuà wǎngwǎng huì yǐngxiǎng pǔtōng rén de rìcháng shēnghuó)- Institutional changes throughout history often affected the daily lives of ordinary people.

制度 is particularly important because it shifts historical discussion away from individual personalities and toward structures.

皇帝 and 帝国

皇帝 (huángdì) means emperor.

帝国 (dìguó) means empire.

These words are straightforward, but advanced historical writing often uses more abstract combinations.

For example, 帝国统治 (dìguó tǒngzhì) means imperial rule, 皇权 (huángquán) means imperial authority, and 皇位 (huángwèi) means the imperial throne.

Example sentences:
13. 皇帝不仅拥有最高的政治权力,还在传统社会中具有重要的象征意义。(huángdì bùjǐn yǒngyǒu zuìgāo de zhèngzhì quánlì, hái zài chuántǒng shèhuì zhōng jùyǒu zhòngyào de xiàngzhēng yìyì)- The emperor not only possessed the highest political power but also had important symbolic significance in traditional society.

14. 皇位继承问题曾经引发多次严重的政治冲突。(huángwèi jìchéng wèntí céngjīng yǐnfā duō cì yánzhòng de zhèngzhì chōngtū)- Questions surrounding succession to the imperial throne once caused numerous serious political conflicts.

继承 and Succession

继承 (jìchéng) means to inherit, succeed, or carry something forward.

In historical writing, it is frequently used to describe succession to political authority, cultural traditions, institutions, and ideas.

Example sentences:
15. 新王朝继承了前朝的一些政治制度,同时进行了改革。(xīn wángcháo jìchéng le qiáncháo de yìxiē zhèngzhì zhìdù, tóngshí jìnxíng le gǎigé)- The new dynasty inherited some of the previous dynasty’s political institutions while also carrying out reforms.

16. 中国传统文化在不同历史时期不断被继承和重新解释。(Zhōngguó chuántǒng wénhuà zài bùtóng lìshǐ shíqī bùduàn bèi jìchéng hé chóngxīn jiěshì)- Traditional Chinese culture was continuously inherited and reinterpreted during different historical periods.

This is a particularly important distinction. 继承 does not always mean copying something unchanged. A later society may 继承 a tradition while simultaneously changing its interpretation.

改革 and Historical Change

改革 (gǎigé) means reform.

It is frequently used when discussing attempts to change an existing political, economic, or social system without necessarily completely replacing it.

Example sentences:
17. 面对严重的社会问题,一些统治者试图通过改革维持政权的稳定。(miàn duì yánzhòng de shèhuì wèntí, yìxiē tǒngzhìzhě shìtú tōngguò gǎigé wéichí zhèngquán de wěndìng)- Faced with serious social problems, some rulers attempted to maintain political stability through reform.

18. 改革往往会触及不同社会群体的利益,因此容易产生争议。(gǎigé wǎngwǎng huì chùjí bùtóng shèhuì qúntǐ de lìyì, yīncǐ róngyì chǎnshēng zhēngyì)- Reform often affects the interests of different social groups and therefore can easily become controversial.

触及 (chùjí) means to affect, reach, or touch upon something, especially an important or sensitive issue. It is common in formal writing.

变革 and 革命

变革 (biàngé) means transformation or major change.

革命 (gémìng) means revolution.

These terms should not be treated as synonyms.

改革 usually suggests changing an existing system.

变革 emphasizes major transformation.

革命 generally describes a more fundamental and radical political or social transformation.

Example sentences:
19. 工业和技术的发展推动了社会结构的深刻变革。(gōngyè hé jìshù de fāzhǎn tuīdòng le shèhuì jiégòu de shēnkè biàngé)- The development of industry and technology drove profound transformations in social structure.

20. 辛亥革命结束了中国延续数千年的君主制度。(Xīnhài Gémìng jiéshù le Zhōngguó yánxù shùqiān nián de jūnzhǔ zhìdù)- The Xinhai Revolution ended China’s monarchy, which had continued for thousands of years.

The distinction between these words is essential when reading serious historical writing.

战争, 冲突 and 动荡

冲突 (chōngtū) means conflict or confrontation.

动荡 (dòngdàng) means turmoil or instability.

These words describe different levels of historical instability.

陷入 (xiànrù) means to fall into or become caught in a difficult situation. It is extremely common in formal Chinese.

起义 and Rebellion

起义 (qǐyì) means uprising or rebellion.

It is an important historical term, but its usage can vary depending on the historical and political perspective of the writer.

Example sentences:
23. 农民起义是中国古代历史上反复出现的重要社会现象。(nóngmín qǐyì shì Zhōngguó gǔdài lìshǐ shàng fǎnfù chūxiàn de zhòngyào shèhuì xiànxiàng)- Peasant uprisings were an important recurring social phenomenon in ancient Chinese history.

24. 一些起义最初只是地方性的反抗,后来逐渐扩大规模。(yìxiē qǐyì zuìchū zhǐshì dìfāngxìng de fǎnkàng, hòulái zhújiàn kuòdà guīmó)- Some uprisings were initially only local acts of resistance but gradually expanded in scale.

反抗 (fǎnkàng) means resistance or to resist. It is broader than 起义 because it does not necessarily imply an organized political uprising.

内乱 and Political Disorder

内乱 (nèiluàn) means internal disorder or civil turmoil.

内战 (nèizhàn) means civil war.

The two terms are related but not identical.

内乱 can refer more generally to internal political or social disorder, whereas 内战 specifically refers to armed conflict between organized groups within the same country or political entity.

中央 and 地方

To understand Chinese history, students need to distinguish 中央 (zhōngyāng) and 地方 (dìfāng).

The relationship between central and local power has been an important issue throughout Chinese history.

Example sentences:

28. 中央政府需要依靠地方官员实施各项政策。(zhōngyāng zhèngfǔ xūyào yǐkào dìfāng guānyuán shíshī gèxiàng zhèngcè)- The central government needs to rely on local officials to implement various policies.

依靠 (yǐkào) means to rely on or depend on. It is widely used in historical, political, and economic writing.

官员 and 官僚

官员 (guānyuán) means government official.

体系 (tǐxì) means system or structure. It is an important HSK 7–9 word because it frequently appears in academic and analytical Chinese.

土地 and Agriculture

For much of Chinese history, agriculture was central to the economy. As a result, historical writing frequently discusses 土地 (tǔdì), 农业 (nóngyè), 粮食 (liángshi), 农民 (nóngmín), and 税收 (shuìshōu).

土地制度 (tǔdì zhìdù) means land system.

税收 (shuìshōu) means taxation or tax revenue.

Example sentences:
31. 土地分配问题长期以来都是影响农村社会稳定的重要因素。(tǔdì fēnpèi wèntí chángqī yǐlái dōu shì yǐngxiǎng nóngcūn shèhuì wěndìng de zhòngyào yīnsù)- The issue of land distribution has long been an important factor affecting stability in rural society.

It is common in historical writing about ethnic groups, populations, and large-scale movements.

Example sentences:

交流 (jiāoliú) means exchange or interaction. It can describe cultural, economic, intellectual, and diplomatic interaction.

文化交流 and Cultural Influence

Chinese history cannot be understood solely within the boundaries of modern China.

Different regions of East Asia were connected through trade, migration, religion, diplomacy, warfare, and intellectual exchange.

文化交流 (wénhuà jiāoliú) means cultural exchange.

文化传播 (wénhuà chuánbō) means cultural transmission or dissemination.

民族 and Ethnic Groups

民族 (mínzú) is a complex and important word in Chinese historical writing.

Depending on context, it can refer to an ethnic group, nation, or people. Its exact meaning must be determined from the surrounding discussion.

This makes 民族 an excellent example of why advanced Chinese requires contextual reading rather than one-to-one translation.

Example sentences:
38. 中国历史上不同民族之间长期存在交流、合作和冲突。(Zhōngguó lìshǐ shàng bùtóng mínzú zhījiān chángqī cúnzài jiāoliú, hézuò hé chōngtū)- Throughout Chinese history, different ethnic groups have experienced long-term interaction, cooperation, and conflict.

签订, 废除 and 条约

Historical Chinese often describes what happened to agreements using precise verbs.

These verbs frequently appear in formal historical texts and are useful well beyond history.

历史背景: The Context Behind an Event

One of the biggest differences between elementary and advanced historical discussion is the importance of 背景 (bèijǐng), meaning background or context.

Historical events rarely occur in isolation. Chinese historians and commentators frequently refer to 历史背景 (lìshǐ bèijǐng), 社会背景 (shèhuì bèijǐng), 政治背景 (zhèngzhì bèijǐng), and 时代背景 (shídài bèijǐng).

Example sentences:
44. 要理解这场改革,首先需要了解当时的历史背景。(yào lǐjiě zhè chǎng gǎigé, shǒuxiān xūyào liǎojiě dāngshí de lìshǐ bèijǐng)- To understand this reform, it is first necessary to understand its historical context.

45. 如果脱离当时的社会背景,就很难准确评价这一历史事件。(rúguǒ tuōlí dāngshí de shèhuì bèijǐng, jiù hěn nán zhǔnquè píngjià zhè yí lìshǐ shìjiàn)- If the social context of the time is ignored, it is difficult to accurately evaluate this historical event.

脱离 (tuōlí) means to become separated from or depart from. In analytical Chinese, it often appears in the structure 脱离实际 (tuōlí shíjì), meaning to become disconnected from reality.

原因 and 后果

When explaining history, students need to distinguish 原因 (yuányīn), cause or reason, from 后果 (hòuguǒ), consequence.

结果 (jiéguǒ) means result or outcome, while 后果 often emphasizes consequences, especially serious or negative ones.

Example sentences:
46. 历史事件往往由多种原因共同造成,而不是由单一因素决定。(lìshǐ shìjiàn wǎngwǎng yóu duō zhǒng yuányīn gòngtóng zàochéng, ér bú shì yóu dānyī yīnsù juédìng)- Historical events are often caused by multiple factors rather than determined by a single factor.

47. 这场战争产生的长期后果直到几十年以后才逐渐显现。(zhè chǎng zhànzhēng chǎnshēng de chángqī hòuguǒ zhídào jǐ shí nián yǐhòu cái zhújiàn xiǎnxiàn)- The long-term consequences of this war only gradually became apparent decades later.

显现 (xiǎnxiàn) means to become apparent or emerge visibly. It is a useful formal word for historical and analytical writing.

导致, 促成 and 造成

Advanced historical writing frequently uses several verbs for causation.

导致 (dǎozhì) means to lead to or cause, often with negative consequences.

促成 (cùchéng) means to help bring about or facilitate something.

造成 (zàochéng) means to cause or result in, frequently referring to damage, losses, or consequences.

Example sentences:
48. 连年的战争导致农业生产严重下降。(liánnián de zhànzhēng dǎozhì nóngyè shēngchǎn yánzhòng xiàjiàng)- Years of warfare led to a serious decline in agricultural production.

50. 洪水造成了严重的人员伤亡和财产损失。(hóngshuǐ zàochéng le yánzhòng de rényuán shāngwáng hé cáichǎn sǔnshī)- The floods caused serious casualties and property losses.

Being able to distinguish these verbs makes historical writing sound substantially more natural and precise.

影响 and 深远影响

影响 (yǐngxiǎng) means influence or impact.

It can function as both a noun and a verb.

A particularly common historical expression is 深远影响 (shēnyuǎn yǐngxiǎng), meaning profound and far-reaching influence.

Example sentences:
51. 这项制度对中国社会的发展产生了深远影响。(zhè xiàng zhìdù duì Zhōngguó shèhuì de fāzhǎn chǎnshēng le shēnyuǎn yǐngxiǎng)- This institution had a profound and far-reaching influence on the development of Chinese society.

52. 这场战争不仅改变了当时的政治格局,也影响了后来的历史进程。(zhè chǎng zhànzhēng bùjǐn gǎibiàn le dāngshí de zhèngzhì géjú, yě yǐngxiǎng le hòulái de lìshǐ jìnchéng)- This war not only changed the political landscape of the time but also influenced the subsequent course of history.

格局 (géjú) means pattern, structure, or overall configuration. In political history, 政治格局 (zhèngzhì géjú) is especially common.

历史进程 and Historical Processes

进程 (jìnchéng) means process or course of development.

历史进程 (lìshǐ jìnchéng) means the course of historical development.

This is more sophisticated than simply saying 历史发展 (lìshǐ fāzhǎn).

Example sentences:
53. 经济变化在很大程度上推动了中国近代历史进程。(jīngjì biànhuà zài hěn dà chéngdù shàng tuīdòng le Zhōngguó jìndài lìshǐ jìnchéng)- Economic changes played a major role in driving the course of modern Chinese history.

程度 (chéngdù) means degree or extent. 很大程度上 (hěn dà chéngdù shàng) means “to a large extent,” a very useful expression in formal Chinese.

时代 and Historical Periods

时代 (shídài) means era, age, or historical period.

It is often used to place an event within a larger historical context.

For example, 近代 (jìndài) means modern times in a historical sense, while 当代 (dāngdài) means contemporary times.

Example sentences:
54. 不同的时代会产生不同的社会问题和文化观念。(bùtóng de shídài huì chǎnshēng bùtóng de shèhuì wèntí hé wénhuà guānniàn)- Different historical eras produce different social problems and cultural ideas.

55. 评价历史人物时,不能完全忽视他们所处的时代。(píngjià lìshǐ rénwù shí, bùnéng wánquán hūshì tāmen suǒ chǔ de shídài)- When evaluating historical figures, one cannot completely ignore the era in which they lived.

所处 (suǒchǔ) means “to be situated in” or “to be in a particular circumstance.” It is a particularly useful formal expression.

历史人物 and Historical Evaluation

历史人物 (lìshǐ rénwù) means historical figure.

Advanced historical discussion requires more than listing what a historical figure did. It often involves 评价 (píngjià), meaning to evaluate or assess.

评价历史人物 can involve examining their achievements, limitations, historical circumstances, and long-term influence.

Example sentences:
56. 如何评价历史人物,往往取决于研究者所采用的标准和历史视角。(rúhé píngjià lìshǐ rénwù, wǎngwǎng qǔjué yú yánjiūzhě suǒ cǎiyòng de biāozhǔn hé lìshǐ shìjiǎo)- How historical figures are evaluated often depends on the standards and historical perspective adopted by researchers.

视角 (shìjiǎo) means perspective or viewpoint.

It is an important HSK 7–9 word because it appears constantly in analytical writing.

功绩 and 贡献

功绩 (gōngjì) means achievements or merits, particularly important accomplishments.

贡献 (gòngxiàn) means contribution.

These words are common when discussing the positive historical influence of individuals or institutions.

Example sentences:
57. 评价一个历史人物时,既要看到他的功绩,也要分析他的局限。(píngjià yí gè lìshǐ rénwù shí, jì yào kàn dào tā de gōngjì, yě yào fēnxī tā de júxiàn)- When evaluating a historical figure, one should recognize both his achievements and his limitations.

局限 (júxiàn) means limitation or constraint. It is extremely useful when writing balanced historical analysis.

史料 and Historical Evidence

To discuss history seriously, students also need vocabulary related to evidence.

史料 (shǐliào) means historical materials or historical sources.

文献 (wénxiàn) means documents or literature, often referring to written sources.

考古 (kǎogǔ) means archaeology or archaeological research.

遗址 (yízhǐ) means archaeological site or historical remains.

59. 历史学家需要综合利用文献、考古资料和其他史料来重建过去。(lìshǐxuéjiā xūyào zōnghé lìyòng wénxiàn, kǎogǔ zīliào hé qítā shǐliào lái chóngjiàn guòqù)- Historians need to make comprehensive use of documents, archaeological materials, and other historical sources to reconstruct the past.

综合 (zōnghé) means comprehensive or to synthesize. It is a highly useful academic word.

记载 and Historical Records

记载 (jìzǎi) means to record or document.

Historical sources may 记载 events, customs, laws, wars, biographies, and social conditions.

The word 记载 is different from 记录 (jìlù). 记录 is a general word for recording something, while 记载 is particularly common in formal, historical, and documentary contexts.

文明 and Civilization

文明 (wénmíng) means civilization, but it can also mean civilized or civilization-related depending on context.

中国文明 (Zhōngguó wénmíng) can refer to Chinese civilization as a historical and cultural phenomenon.

文明史 (wénmíngshǐ) means history of civilization.

Example sentences:
61. 中华文明在长期发展过程中形成了丰富多样的文化传统。(Zhōnghuá wénmíng zài chángqī fāzhǎn guòchéng zhōng xíngchéng le fēngfù duōyàng de wénhuà chuántǒng)- Chinese civilization developed rich and diverse cultural traditions over the course of its long history.

形成 (xíngchéng) means to form or develop. It is one of the most important verbs in academic Chinese.

传统 and Continuity

传统 (chuántǒng) means tradition or traditional.

中国传统文化 (Zhōngguó chuántǒng wénhuà) is one of the most common expressions in discussions of Chinese culture.

But advanced writing often asks whether a tradition remained unchanged or was transformed over time.

Example sentences:
62. 一些传统在现代社会中仍然存在,但其具体形式已经发生变化。(yìxiē chuántǒng zài xiàndài shèhuì zhōng réngrán cúnzài, dàn qí jùtǐ xíngshì yǐjīng fāshēng biànhuà)- Some traditions still exist in modern society, but their specific forms have changed.

This distinction between continuity and change is central to historical thinking.

延续, 变化 and 变迁

延续 (yánxù) means to continue or persist.

变化 (biànhuà) means change.

变迁 (biànqiān) means change or transformation over time, especially in social or historical contexts.

64. 城市化深刻改变了中国社会的结构和生活方式,也带来了广泛的社会变迁。(chéngshìhuà shēnkè gǎibiàn le Zhōngguó shèhuì de jiégòu hé shēnghuó fāngshì, yě dài lái le guǎngfàn de shèhuì biànqiān)- Urbanization profoundly changed the structure and lifestyle of Chinese society and also brought about extensive social transformation.

变迁 is particularly valuable for HSK 7–9 because it has a more formal and historical tone than simple 变化.

历史不是简单的过去

For advanced Chinese students, one of the most important lessons is that 历史 (lìshǐ) does not simply mean “the past.”

History is also an interpretation of the past.

Chinese historical writing therefore contains words such as 解释 (jiěshì), 评价 (píngjià), 观点 (guāndiǎn), 视角 (shìjiǎo), 证据 (zhèngjù), 研究 (yánjiū), and 争议 (zhēngyì).

Example sentences:
65. 对同一历史事件,不同历史学家可能提出完全不同的解释。(duì tóng yí lìshǐ shìjiàn, bùtóng lìshǐxuéjiā kěnéng tíchū wánquán bùtóng de jiěshì)- Different historians may offer completely different interpretations of the same historical event.

66. 历史研究不仅需要掌握大量史料,还需要具备批判性思维。(lìshǐ yánjiū bùjǐn xūyào zhǎngwò dàliàng shǐliào, hái xūyào jùbèi pīpànxì sīwéi)- Historical research requires not only mastery of a large amount of historical material but also critical thinking.

具备 (jùbèi) means to possess or have a particular quality or ability. It is especially common in formal Chinese.

争议 and Historical Interpretation

争议 (zhēngyì) means controversy or dispute.

Historical issues can be described as 存在争议 (cúnzài zhēngyì), meaning that controversy exists.

Example sentences:
67. 关于这一历史事件的具体原因,学术界至今仍然存在一定争议。(guānyú zhè yí lìshǐ shìjiàn de jùtǐ yuányīn, xuéshùjiè zhìjīn réngrán cúnzài yídìng zhēngyì)- There is still some disagreement in the academic community about the precise causes of this historical event.

至今 (zhìjīn) means up to the present or to this day. It is frequently used in formal historical writing.

从事件到结构

A basic approach to history focuses on events.

An advanced approach also considers structures.

Instead of simply asking “What happened?”, advanced historical Chinese asks:

为什么会发生?

为什么发生在这个时期?

谁从中获益?

谁承担了代价?

哪些制度促成了这一结果?

这一变化对后世产生了什么影响?

These questions require abstract vocabulary.

结构 (jiégòu) means structure.

因素 (yīnsù) means factor.

条件 (tiáojiàn) means condition.

机制 (jīzhì) means mechanism.

趋势 (qūshì) means trend.

背景 (bèijǐng) means background or context.

Example sentences:
68. 经济、政治和社会结构等多种因素共同推动了这一历史变化。(jīngjì, zhèngzhì hé shèhuì jiégòu děng duō zhǒng yīnsù gòngtóng tuīdòng le zhè yí lìshǐ biànhuà)- Multiple factors, including economic, political, and social structures, jointly drove this historical change.

69. 从长期趋势来看,这一改革并不是一个孤立的历史事件。(cóng chángqī qūshì lái kàn, zhè yí gǎigé bìng bú shì yí gè gūlì de lìshǐ shìjiàn)- From the perspective of long-term trends, this reform was not an isolated historical event.

孤立 (gūlì) means isolated. It is often used in academic writing to warn against examining something separately from its broader context.

用中文讲历史

Being able to discuss Chinese history in Chinese requires a change in vocabulary from concrete nouns to abstract relationships.

Instead of merely saying:

秦朝灭亡了。

(Qíncháo mièwáng le)

“The Qin dynasty collapsed.”

an advanced student might say:

秦朝的迅速灭亡与政治制度、社会矛盾以及长期战争等多种因素有关。

(Qíncháo de xùnsù mièwáng yǔ zhèngzhì zhìdù, shèhuì máodùn yǐjí chángqī zhànzhēng děng duō zhǒng yīnsù yǒuguān)

“The rapid collapse of the Qin dynasty was related to multiple factors, including its political system, social contradictions, and prolonged warfare.”

The second sentence is much closer to the kind of Chinese found in historical essays and serious nonfiction.

Notice the vocabulary:

灭亡 (mièwáng), collapse or perish

政治制度 (zhèngzhì zhìdù), political system

社会矛盾 (shèhuì máodùn), social contradictions

长期战争 (chángqī zhànzhēng), prolonged warfare

因素 (yīnsù), factor

有关 (yǒuguān), to be related to

These are exactly the kinds of words that make advanced Chinese different from everyday conversational Chinese.

Why Historical Vocabulary Matters for HSK 7–9

Chinese history is an especially useful subject for advanced vocabulary development because historical writing naturally combines abstract nouns, formal verbs, causal structures, comparative language, and analytical expressions.

When reading a historical article, you may encounter a sentence such as:

这一时期的政治动荡不仅削弱了中央政权的统治能力,也加剧了地方势力之间的矛盾,从而为后来的社会变革创造了条件。

(zhè yì shíqī de zhèngzhì dòngdàng bùjǐn xuēruò le zhōngyāng zhèngquán de tǒngzhì nénglì, yě jiājù le dìfāng shìlì zhījiān de máodùn, cóng’ér wèi hòulái de shèhuì biàngé chuàngzào le tiáojiàn)

“The political turmoil of this period not only weakened the central regime’s ability to govern but also intensified conflicts among local forces, thereby creating conditions for later social transformation.”

A sentence like this contains a remarkable amount of HSK 7–9 vocabulary.

政治动荡 (zhèngzhì dòngdàng) means political turmoil.

削弱 (xuēruò) means to weaken.

中央政权 (zhōngyāng zhèngquán) means central political authority.

统治能力 (tǒngzhì nénglì) means governing capacity.

加剧 (jiājù) means to intensify or aggravate.

地方势力 (dìfāng shìlì) means local forces.

矛盾 (máodùn) means contradiction or conflict.

从而 (cóng’ér) means thereby or as a result.

创造条件 (chuàngzào tiáojiàn) means to create conditions.

社会变革 (shèhuì biàngé) means social transformation.

This is why history is such a powerful source of advanced Chinese vocabulary. A single historical paragraph can expose you to the language of politics, economics, society, culture, institutions, causation, and argumentation at the same time.

From Memorizing Dynasties to Understanding Historical Chinese

Memorizing the names of Chinese dynasties is useful, but it is only the beginning.

夏 (Xià), 商 (Shāng), 周 (Zhōu), 秦 (Qín), 汉 (Hàn), 唐 (Táng), 宋 (Sòng), 元 (Yuán), 明 (Míng), and 清 (Qīng) are essential historical reference points, but knowing their names does not automatically enable you to discuss Chinese history.

At HSK 7–9 level, the goal is to develop a vocabulary that allows you to explain relationships between events.

You need to understand how a government 统治 (tǒngzhì) a society, how a political system 制度 (zhìdù) develops, how an economy 繁荣 (fánróng) or 衰落 (shuāiluò), how a reform 改革 (gǎigé) changes institutions, how a war 导致 (dǎozhì) social disruption, how different groups interact, how traditions 延续 (yánxù), and how historical changes 影响 (yǐngxiǎng) later generations.

Once these words become familiar, Chinese history stops looking like a collection of disconnected names and dates. It becomes a network of processes, causes, consequences, institutions, conflicts, and ideas.

For an advanced Chinese student, that is a much more powerful way to read history.
