We all love dining out. Experiencing the flavors of a Chinese restaurant can be a delightful adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned food lover or a curious newcomer, the process of ordering food in a Chinese eatery offers a unique blend of cultural interaction and culinary exploration.

The following conversation takes you through a typical scenario of a customer entering a Chinese restaurant, choosing a table, perusing the menu, ordering dishes, enjoying the meal, requesting additional services, and finally settling the bill. Through this dialogue, you’ll gain insight into the polite exchanges and practical phrases used in such settings, making your next dining experience in a Chinese restaurant both enjoyable and effortless.

At the Entrance of the Restaurant (在餐厅门口, Zài cāntīng ménkǒu)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 你好,请问现在可以进去用餐吗?(Hello, may I go in and have a meal now? Nǐ hǎo, qǐng wèn xiàn zài kě yǐ jìn qù yòng cān ma?)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 当然可以,欢迎光临!(Of course you can. Welcome! Dāngrán kěyǐ, huānyíng guānglín!)

Choosing a Table (选座位, Xuǎn zuòwèi)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 我们想找个安静点的位置。(We’d like to find a quieter seat. Wǒmen xiǎng zhǎo gè ānjìng diǎn de wèizhi.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 这边请,这个位置比较安静。(This way, please. This seat is relatively quiet. Zhè biān qǐng, zhè gè wèizhi bǐjiào ānjìng.)

Looking at the Menu (看菜单, Kàn càidān)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 麻烦把菜单拿给我们看看。(Please give us the menu to look at. Máfan bǎ càidān ná gěi wǒmen kàn kàn.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 好的,这是菜单,请慢慢看。(Okay, here’s the menu. Take your time to look. Hǎo de, zhè shì càidān, qǐng mànmàn kàn.)

Ordering Food (点菜, Diǎn cài)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 我们要一份宫保鸡丁、一份麻婆豆腐,还有一份青菜汤。(We’ll have a serving of Kung Pao Chicken, a serving of Mapo Tofu, and a serving of vegetable soup. Wǒmen yào yí fèn gōngbǎo jīdīng, yí fèn mápó dòufu, hái yǒu yí fèn qīngcài tāng.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 好的,还需要别的吗?(Okay, do you need anything else? Hǎo de, hái xūyào bié de ma?)
  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 先这些吧,不够再点。(Just these for now. We’ll order more if it’s not enough. Xiān zhèxiē ba, bùgòu zài diǎn.)

During the Meal (用餐时, Yòng cān shí)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 这道宫保鸡丁味道真不错。(This Kung Pao Chicken tastes really good. Zhè dào gōngbǎo jīdīng wèidào zhēn bùcuò.)
  • Friend (朋友 Péngyǒu): 是啊,麻婆豆腐也很下饭。(Yes, the Mapo Tofu is also very good with rice. Shì a, mápó dòufu yě hěn xià fàn.)

Asking for Service (要求服务, Yāoqiú fúwù)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 服务员,麻烦再加点米饭。(Waiter, please add some more rice. Fúwùyuán, máfan zài jiā diǎn mǐfàn.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 好的,马上就来。(Okay, it’ll be here right away. Hǎo de, mǎshàng jiù lái.)

Paying the Bill (结账, Jiézhàng)

  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 服务员,买单。(Waiter, the bill, please. Fúwùyuán, mǎidān.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 好的,您一共消费了 200 元。(Okay, your total bill is 200 yuan. Hǎo de, nín yígòng xiāofèi le 200 yuán.)
  • Customer (顾客 Gùkè): 给你 300 元,不用找了。(Here’s 300 yuan. Keep the change. Gěi nǐ 300 yuán, bùyòng zhǎo le.)
  • Waiter (服务员 Fúwùyuán): 谢谢,欢迎下次再来!(Thank you. Welcome back next time! Xièxiè, huānyíng xià cì zài lái!)
